The Cactus

Scorching, broiling, desert heat
Beating senselessly the sand
Dry and destitute and bleak
Lay the scape of sun drenched land
Here a Creature made its home
Spiky features sharp as thorn
Standing shadeless, all alone
Quite forgotten and forlorn
Twisting tortures sliding by
Lurking snaky eyes of evil
Spying waters which to try
Scaly, gliding beast primeval
Chilly, moonless, starry nights
Endless, sweltry, sunfilled days
Were its life of drought dry plight
Dreams of clouds and rainy sprays
To the sky-god begged for rain
Lands of sand and soil so dry
Till a flood filled their terrain
Fed its snakes and all Cacti.
